The Harvest Family Centre

We are currently renting a premise in the vicinity of the Theparak 3 district along the railway track. The area of the piece of land is about 643.6 sq. m. (6,927.7 sq ft.) This piece of land has a double-storey house and garden and is used as our Harvest Family Centre (HFC) – the centre of our outreach to the community in the Theparak community. Our HFC functions like a home to the children in the community. They often come here to play after school, during the holidays or when they have problems. We organize activities for the children on Children’s Day, for the youth on Valentines Day and other activities on various occasions. We continually look for opportunities to show the love of God and to be a place that provides encouragement and counsel to help the children lead normal lives. Our community outreach efforts include the providing of crisis intervention assistance to families and households in need. (For instance, we have helped families affected by alcoholism, teenage pregnancies or abuse.) - for more info see the report.

The call

About 8 years ago, the BB from ACS(I) embarked on their first mission trip to KKCS. It was here that God challenged me to serve Him. As a result of that challenge, I became a trained teacher in Singapore, and have been going up almost yearly to run evangelistic programmes and English camps for the children in the school.

I taught at Swiss Cottage Primary School upon graduating from NIE until the school merged in 2002. I am now with Balestier Hill Primary School, serving as HOD of Pupil Management.

After a long trip in Dec 2004, I felt God leading me to serve Him in a more direct way. The school is in need of a primary science teacher and a more refined and exciting science programme. Having been developed and given experience in this area in Singapore, I felt God directing me to serve Him there. After many months of waiting and persevering, God finally provided a way for me to take leave from the teaching service in Singapore and teach in KKCS.

My work

I teach a Primary 6 and Secondary 3 class in a crude mix of broken Thai and English. Marking takes me several lifetimes as I teach Thai-language based subjects. Apart from teaching duties, there is an element of ministry work which I have yet to discover. Right now I know which areas God is leading and have an idea of who He wants me to minister to. However, working in Thailand is different. Relationships have to be built, trust and friendship built up and a natural ministry will develop. Preaching and teaching without that base will not be successful is evidenced by the low conversion rate despite many hundreds of years of mission work. I am learning to be “meek” and patient instead of being quick, efficient and direct.
